Challenge Cup Quarter Final Write Up

Post by Ossie »

INGLE Farm’s hopes of a League and Cup double are very much alive after a 2-0 win over Salisbury Inter in the Challenge Cup Quarter Final at Underdown Park

The 2015 Challenge Cup winning Farm almost got the perfect start on two minutes when a Musti Ipekdal cross just evaded the out stretched James Quinn.

Inter came close on five minutes when a Ross Tripodi shot from distance went just wide.

On 13 minutes Farm took the lead when Jarred Noel picked the ball up and drove towards the box before unleashing a shot that deflected into the goal to the delight of the travelling support.

The home team had a great opportunity to draw level on 20 minutes when Chris Fleming did well on the left-hand side before cutting back to Jimmy Greaves whose shot took a deflection before hitting the cross bar.

Farm came close on 23 minutes when a Noel cross found Ipekdal whose goal bound header was brilliantly tipped over the bar by inter keeper Josh Foreshaw.

A minute later it was 2-0 when Dean Kendrick flicked a ball into the box and Quinn was on hand to bravely header the ball home.

The visitors were in cruise control and on 43 minutes substitute BJ McCormack let fly from distance only to be denied by another brilliant Foreshaw save.

In the 2nd half Inter to their credit lifted the intensity but struggled to create clear cut opportunities as Farm moved into the last four.

Farm coach Paul Simpson “We controlled the 1st half today. Inter are a team who have put us out of the cup a few times so we are really pleased to progress.”

CUP Holders Elizabeth Downs saw off a determined Noarlunga to run out 3-0 winners at Argana Park.

The Maroons came into the game as strong favourites against their 2nd division opponent and on 15 minutes they were in front after Billy Allotey got on the end of a Luke Lawley cross to head home.

Noarlunga refused to buckle and Downs keeper Ben Aldridge needed to be at his best to keep the home team in front at half time.

The lead was doubled on 65 minutes when Allotey turned provider with a square ball to Sam Watson who side footed the ball home.

With 15 minutes left on the clock the game was sealed with a clinical left footed strike from Sean Brennan.

Downs Coach Steve Hughes “Noarlunga were very good. It was a good contest and we are obviously happy to move through to the Semis.”

SUNDAY 3rd Division Macedonia have caused the upset of the round with a thrilling 2-0 defeat of Parafield Gardens at Bradman Oval.

Macedonia travelled to Parafield to play their 1st Challenge Cup Quarter final since 1999 and after a nervous start Macedonia worked their way into the game as the teams went to the break locked at 0-0.

Dreams of an upset were well and truly alive on the hour when Olumide Adisa played in Richard Sokiri who struck a wonderful strike into the top corner to give Macedonia a 1-0 lead.

With 10 minutes left on the clock the visitors doubled their lead when Adisa picked the ball up on the right before rounding two defenders and cutting the ball back to Sokiri who slotted his 2nd to the cheers of the Macedonia faithful.

Macedonia Chairman John Foster-Borg was emotional after the win “It’s a massive boost to the club. We have had a bit of negativity around us in recent years but we are working really hard to turn that around and days like today help that.” Any preference on who Macedonia play? “We believe the players are up to playing any side so we look forward to the challenge.”

2016 Challenge Cup Winners Brahma Lodge were forced to work hard for their 3-2 victory over Para Hills East at Para Hills Oval.

Brahma jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Robbie McDonald and Michael Mullen before a 1st half injury time Russell Clayton goal got East back into the game at 2-1.

The visiting Lodge regained their two-goal advantage through Chad Bugeja before Jarred McGloughlin found the net for Para Hills East with ten minutes left on the clock.

Brahma held on to move into the semis although East coach Alan O’Donnell felt like his side deserved more “We gave some cheap goals away but I thought we were worthy of extra time.”
