Sunday Premier Round 13 Write Up

Post by Ossie »

REIGNING League Champions Elizabeth Downs remain in the title hunt after a 3-1 win over Brahma Lodge at Argana Park.

Both teams came into the game knowing that a loss would all but end their championship hopes with 2nd placed Downs four points behind league leading Ingle
Farm while the 3rd placed Brahma trailed Farm by five points.

After an early feeling out period the Downs grabbed the lead on 14 minutes when a Luke Lawley cross was flicked in by a sliding Mat Watson.

On 26 minutes Lodge had a good chance when Dillon Centrone was played through only to be denied by Ben Aldridge diving in at his feet.

It was end to end stuff and this time Downs Tommy Blackett was through on goal only to be denied by a fine Jimmy McKee save.

Lodge had a goal disallowed for offside on 34 minutes and four minutes later they found themselves 2-0 down when a misplaced McKee clearance found Blackett who shot from 40 yards into an unguarded net to the delight of the Downs army of fans.

11 minutes after the break the game could have been over but a Brayden Gundlach cross was spooned over the bar by Sean Brennan and a minute later it was game on when a fine Centrone ball into the box was slotted neatly by Robbie McDonald.

The home team regained their two-goal lead on 69 minutes when a through ball found Billy Allotey who drove hard at the defence before steadying and firing home.

The win keeps the Maroons in the title hunt while for 2016 League Champions Brahma an eight-point deficit appears to big a gap to peg back.

Downs coach Steve Hughes “Really happy with the way the boys followed the game plan to a tee, it was an important win to keep the pressure on Farm.”

INGLE Farm remain four points clear at the top of the table after a hard fought 2-1 win over Para Hills East at Para Hills Oval.

When the teams met back in round four it needed an 82-minute Farm goal to seal a 1-0 win so despite their respective places on the ladder this was always going to be a tricky game for the league leaders.

The teams went to the break locked at 0-0 and ten minutes into the 2nd half Farm took the lead from the penalty spot with the experienced Chris Ennis converting.

On 75 minutes the points seemed safe when a ball into the box was well met by James Quinn who made it 2-0.

Easties have been a team in form of late and they refused to give in and on 81 minutes a goal mouth scramble finished with a Michael Whitford goal.

Farm held on to the delight of coach Paul Simpson “We are obviously happy with the result, you think your cruising at 2-0 but the goal made for a nervy finish. Credit to East who are a good team.”

ELIZABETH Vale have taken a huge step towards Premier Division survival with a 3-1 win over Para Hills West at Manor Farm Ground.

The Vale travelled looking to build on some recent good form while Westies were looking to consolidate their top four spot on the table.

Westies opened the scoring on 19 minutes when some good inter play finished with a cracking Tom Foglia 18-yard strike.

Almost immediately the Vale were level when a Jordan Kember free kick could only be parried and Chris Nicholls was on hand to fire home the equaliser.

On 23 minutes the visitors were 2-1 up with Nicholls playing in Michael Francis who made no mistake.

The game was sealed on 70 minutes when Bryn Fairman’s one on one opportunity was saved before Cale Balikubiri followed up to slot the rebound.

Vale coach Tim Crawford “It was an old fashioned Vale performance. The boys fought and scrapped for everything, I’m really proud of them today.”

TEA Tree Gully got off the foot of the table with a stirring 3-1 win over Parafield Gardens at Tilley Park.

Gully came into the game looking to turn good performances into much needed points and on 10 minutes they took a lead when Rhys Devlin pounced on a defensive error to fire the ball home.

On 25 minutes the Gully fans were cheering a 2nd goal when Morgan Taylor was fouled and Liam Cook stepped forward to finish from the penalty spot.

The visiting Gardens got themselves back in the game on 44 minutes to narrow Gully’s lead to 2-1.

With 15 minutes left on the clock Gully went 3-1 up in style when a cross was met by a Hamish Taylor scissor kick and when that was saved the rebound fell to Nick Johns who incredibly fired the ball home with a scissor kick of his own.

The day only got better for Gully with keeper Fraser Rickard saving a penalty as Gully moved to 9th on the table just one point behind the 8th placed Para Hills East.

Gully coach Mat Flounders “We needed that today, we had a bit of luck which I think we deserved.”

A LAST-minute Michael Marchioro header secured a 4-3 Salisbury Inter win over neighbour Salisbury Florina at Underdown Park.

Inter came into the game looking to end a five-game losing streak in the league while Florina were looking for a much-needed win to jump out of the relegation zone.

After missing a few early opportunities Inter grabbed the lead on 25 minutes when Jimmy Greaves converted an Andy McConnell cross.

Florina drew level on the stroke of half time when Kale Whicker found the back of the net.

On the hour Inter were back in front when McConnell scored from close range but Florina drew level moments later through Evan Karinikos who fired home from 18 yards.

The goals kept coming with McConnell scoring his 2nd goal on 66 minutes after a fine Chris Fleming cross.

With 10 minutes left on the clock Florina were level with Christos Cafcakis converting from the penalty spot.

Just as it appeared both sides would take a point a Matt Centrone free kick was headed home by Marchioro to the cheers of the Inter fans.

Inter coach Steve Cook “I felt we controlled the game and we really needed this win to get back on track.”
Florina coach Jeff McCormack “They were the better team but in the end we had a point and we let it slip.”
