UPDATED ROUND 12 WRITE UP

Post by Ossie »

Match of the Day
A CHRIS Nicholls 2nd half header helped Elizabeth Vale gain a vital point in a 1-1 draw with Para Hills East at Moflin Road.

The Vale came into the game in 7th place, one point clear of the 8th placed East, making this one an old-fashioned relegation six pointer.

On 11 minutes the Vale had a fantastic opportunity to open the scoring when a quality through ball from Thierry Hatungimana found Bryn Fairman who disappointingly pulled his chance wide.

The home team were made to pay on 18 minutes when Jack Wegener played a superb ball into Jarryd McLaughlin who slotted his chance under the diving Vale keeper.

East had the better of the opening half and had a goal disallowed for offside on 35 minutes as they went to the break 1-0 up.

After the break the home team lifted and on 48 minutes a Rob Groth lob picked out Michael Francis who did well to bring the ball down before firing just over.

Easties still looked dangerous going forward with McLaughlin and Tommy Humphries both shooting wide from good opportunities.

On the hour the Vale drew level when a Groth freekick was brilliantly headed home off the underside of the bar from veteran Chris Nicholls.

On 80 minutes the Vale looked like grabbing all three points when East keeper Keegan French parried a long distance shot and when Fairman hit the rebound it looked like a certain goal before being cleared off the line.

Despite the efforts of both sides they had to settle for a point each.

Vale coach Tim Crawford “I was pleased with the response of the boys after going behind.”

East coach Alan O’Donnell “I thought we could have put them away but to be fair they had the better of the 2nd half and a draw was probably a fair result.”

A STEFAN Barletta 2nd half double helped the league leading Ingle Farm to a hard fought 3-1 win over Tea Tree Gully at Walkley Park.

Top vs bottom would suggest a one sided battle but this was far from it as Gully dominated the first half.

Unfortunately for Gully they couldn’t convert their first half dominance into goals and on 50 minutes they were behind when Barletta took advantage of a poor clearance to give Farm the lead.

The lead was doubled on the hour when Liam Mulvaney reacted first to fire home from a rebound.

Gully refused to give in and were back in the game when Rhys Devlin pounced on a defensive mix up to make it 2-1.

Any chance of an upset was put to bed on 80 minutes when Barletta scored his 2nd to the delight of the home fans.

Farm coach Paul Simpson “Happy with the result but credit to Gully who are a very good team.”
Gully coach Matt Flounders “We are making too many mistakes which good sides make you pay for. We showed for 80 minutes we can match the best teams.”

THE 2nd placed Elizabeth Downs have come from behind to defeat Parafield Gardens 3-1 at Bradman Oval.

The Downs were meeting a Gardens team in good form and the home side showed that form in the opening 25 minutes.

On 15 minutes Gardens took the lead when a free kick into the box was fired home by Brodie O’Neil.

Downs keeper Ben Aldridge needed to be at his best to keep Gardens at bay and the home side thought they’d doubled the lead through the ever dangerous Alban Martini only to be denied by the offside flag.

The 2017 league champions were level on the half hour when Matt Watson converted a Tommy Blackett cross and seven minutes later the Maroons went in front when a Luke Lawley cut back found Watson who buried his 2nd goal.

The result remained in doubt until the 83rd minute when a Sean Brennan through ball found Brayden Gundlach who took his chance to the roars of the travelling Maroon fans.

Downs Coach Steve Hughes “Ben Aldridge kept us in the game early and the boys responded well to going behind.”
Gardens Coach John McCormack “I was proud of the boys today, I think we have matched a very good side which shows how much improvement we’ve made.”

BRAHMA Lodge remain in league title contention with a thumping 7-1 win over a disappointing Salisbury Inter at Cockburn Green.

The 3rd placed Lodge came into the game looking to revenge a 2-1 loss to Inter in round 3 while Inter were looking to halt a four-game losing run in the league.

The game was all but over at half time as Brahma stormed to a 3-0 lead and the 2nd half was much of the same as they strolled to a convincing win.

Brahma coach Fred Agius “We came into the game expecting a tough contest but after we scored some early goals we controlled the game from then on.”

PARA Hills West ended a three-game losing run in the League after defeating Salisbury Florina 1-0 at Underdown Park.

The 9th placed Florina were looking for a much-needed result and they started well with the wind at their backs hitting the crossbar and post in the opening half.

It was a game to two halves and after the break Westies started to take control and opened the scoring on 65 minutes when a Brodie Brompton corner was headed home by David Jones.

The win moves Westies up to 4th on the table while Florina remain in the relegation zone two point adrift of the 8th placed Para Hills East.

Westies coach Michael Iacovino “It was a game of two halves with the wind playing its part. We created a lot of chances and on another day, could have scored more. It’s good to get back on the winners list.”
