Challenge Cup Round 2 Write Up

Post by Ossie »

A DOMINANT 1st half Salisbury Inter display helped them to a 4-0 win over Elizabeth Vale in their Challenge Cup round 2 clash at Moflin Road.

Both teams have a rich history in the Cup with Inter having won the title nine times while the Vale have lifted the Cup on six occasions.

Inter started the game strongly and took a deserved lead on 23 minutes when Dan Luciano drove into the box before firing home from a tight angle.
Two minutes later the lead was doubled when the visitors had a shot cleared off the line before the rebound fell to Ross Tripodi who slotted his chance coolly.

The Vale came close on 33 minutes through player/coach Tim Crawford who volleyed just over the bar from a corner.

Just as the home team started to get into the game the tie was all but sealed when a Jimmy Greaves corner was headed home by Michael Marchioro on the stroke of half time.

On 57 minutes a fine Mark Burbridge cross found Crawford whose goal bound header was brilliantly tipped over by Inter keeper Josh Foreshaw.

Any thought of a Vale comeback was put to bed on 65 minutes when Tripodi grabbed his 2nd goal with a clinical finish from 18 yards out.

Inter coach Steve Cook was pleased with the win “I was really happy with the result but also with the way we played. I thought we knocked the ball around well and controlled the game.”

In other Games
CUP Holders Elizabeth Downs
cruised through to the 3rd round with a 9-1 win over Saturday 2nd division opponent Elizabeth Grove at Dauntsey Road with Sean Brennan scoring a hat trick and Billy Allotey scoring twice.

2017 Finalists Para Hills West progressed to round three with a hard fought 3-1 win over Salisbury Florina at Underdown Park.

Westies opened the scoring on six minutes when Jarred Ebert struck after a goal mouth scramble.

On 43 minutes a short pass back was pounced on by Florina’s Zaric Mata but he was denied by Westies keeper David Brook and Westies went straight up the park and scored through Lewis Marzocca to make it 2-0.

After the break Florina pushed and created many chances with Beau Singlewood and Kale Wicker both going close.
On 63 minutes Florina deservedly reduced the gap when Wicker made a bustling run down the right before squaring to Trevor Hall who fired home but six minutes later Westies regained their two-goal advantage through a Tom Foglia goal.

Westies coach Michael Iacovino “The result faltered us a little but after losing a couple of players to injury in the 1st half we are really pleased with the win.”

Florina coach Jeff McCormack “It’s the tale of our season unfortunately, we played well but did convert. Credit to Westies who took their chances.”

PARA Hills East made light work of Saturday Premier opponent Modbury Jets winning 5-1 despite finishing the game with nine players.

Tom Humphries and Russell Clayton gave East a 2-0 lead before a red card reduced them to ten men. Scott Gannon converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-1 at the break.
Tyler Winn made it 3-1 and when Jack Wegner scored the tie was all but over at 4-1.
East again saw red but despite being two players short they extended their lead through a Jarad McGloughlin goal.

SEVEN-time Challenge Cup winner Parafield Gardens came from behind to beat Pontian Eagles 5-4, Premier division league leaders Ingle Farm defeated Rowe Park 3-0 while 2016 winners Brahma Lodge progressed with a 4-2 win over Adelaide Red Blue Eagles.
