Craig Lairds Round 1 Review

Post by pecker »

Match of the Day
PARA Hills West have returned to the top flight with a stirring come from behind 3-2 win over 2017 League Runner Up Parafield Gardens at Manor Farm Reserve.
Michael Iacovino’s Westies team went undefeated in their 2017 Division 2 campaign but found themselves behind on 10 minutes.
Gardens Dylan Baker picked the ball up around 30 yards from goal before letting loose with a bullet that left Westies keeper David Brook helpless to the delight of the travelling Parafield support.
Both sides were creating chances on a tight pitch with Gardens Alban Martini shooting wide while Westies captain Shaun Robertson headed over from close range.
The visiting Parafield doubled their lead on the hour when West’s defenders failed to clear a free kick and 17-year-old Alun Crockford was on hand to slide the ball home.
Two minutes later Westies were back in the game when Lewis Marzocca headed home a perfect Brodie Brampton cross.
As players tired chances came thick and fast with Gardens Kyle Jones shooting wide while West’s recruit Tom Foglia was twice denied before Jarod Ebert missed a golden chance on 74 minutes scuffing his shot wide.
Ebert redeemed himself on 81 minutes with a glorious strike from 30 yards out which whistled into the top left corner to make it 2-2.
Westies pushed for victory and just as it looked like time would run out they struck when a Marzocco corner was deflected into the Gardens net for an own goal in what would be the last play of the game as the Westies faithful celebrated an opening day victory.
Westies Coach Michael Iacovino “The character of the group was terrific” and what are Iacovino’s expectations in 2018? “The top 2 or 3 teams are exceptional but we will go into every game looking for a result.”
Gardens coach John McCormack “We had a good preseason but the squad is a bit stretched at the moment and I thought once Westies got their goal they lifted, credit to them.”

MEANWHILE Salisbury Inter have got off to a dream start with a 2-1 win over 2017 Champions Elizabeth Downs at Underdown Park.
The Maroons under new coach Steve Hughes started brightly with Darcy Clarke denied on five minutes by a diving Josh Foreshaw save.
On 36 minutes Clarke fired over when through one on one and three minutes later Inter took the lead when Andy McConnell played in new recruit Jimmy Greaves who finished in style from inside the box.
Half time Maroons substitute Tommy Blackett shot just wide on 49 minutes but made no mistake on 64 minutes when he volleyed home the equalizer to set up a thrilling finish.
Inter keeper Foreshaw was in fine form as he denied two fine efforts from Clarke and Damien Dalglish and with nine minutes left on the clock a low hard Michael Centrone free kick was deflected past a diving Ben Aldridge as Inter sealed all three points.
Inter coach Steve Cook “I felt the boys showed a lot of desire today, it’s a good way to start the season.”
BRAHMA Lodge have sent a message that they will be contender in 2018 with a 6-0 thrashing of Para Hills East at Para Hills Oval.
Lodge, under new coach Chad Bugeja, took a 2-0 lead to the half time break with goals from Robbie McDonald and Troy Damiral.
The 2nd half was the Michael Mullen show as he scored a hat trick before Peter McDermott rounded of the scoring with a headed goal.
Chad Bugeja “I’m fortunate to have a group that can adjust our playing style during the game which we needed to do that a couple of times today.”
INGLE Farm opened their account with a comfortable 3-0 win over Salisbury Florina at Walkleys Park.
The Farmers broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when an Ala Mobedi corner was strongly headed home by Chris Ennis and the lead was doubled on 40 minutes when a James Parker cross was headed home by Liam Mulvaney.
Any thoughts of a Florina comeback ended on 67 minutes when Farm substitute Callum McKay was fouled and a penalty awarded. McKays spot kick hit the post but Mobedi was on hand to slot home the rebound.
Farm coach Paul Simpson “We started slowly last season so the three points today was a great result for us.”
ELIZABETH Vale have ended up on the right side of a nine-goal thriller running out 5-4 winners over the newly promoted Tea Tree Gully at Tilley Reserve.
Gully opened the scoring on 15 minutes through Hamish Taylor but from the point on the 1st half was the Mark Burbridge show as he scored a hat trick before Michael Francis converted a penalty to give the Vale a 4-1 lead.
After the break Gully showed some character with Rhys Devlin and Damien Brown making it 4-3 before Burbridge fired home his 4th goal for the day.
Another Rhys Devlin goal set up an exciting finale to the game with the Vale hanging on.
Vale coach Tim Crawford “Our 1st half was outstanding, in the 2nd half we let them back in but the boys dug in and got the result.”
Gully coach Matt Flounders “Our boys showed some real character today but unfortunately our 1st half left us too much to do.”

McKay also wasn't fouled for the penalty it was another Ingle Farm sub ( no. 15) that came on 20 mins to go that was fouled in the penalty box

If you call it a penalty - the Florina defender was in front, when the penalty was called.
