Craig Laird's Sunday Premier Division Round Up
Round 16 - August 27, 2017
Match of the Day
MODBURY Vista’s hopes of survival in the Sunday Premier Division remain alive after a narrow 1-0 win over Para Hills East at Richardson Reserve.
Vista came into the game knowing that anything less than a win would all but seal their fate with Ingle Farm and Para Hills East both six points ahead.
This was always going to be about the result and not the performace and that’s the way the game panned out on a ground which is less than condusive to playing good football.
Chances were few and far between with Vista’s Chris Rutter forcing a good save from East keeper Keegan French on 13 minutes while for East Daniel Pearce’s headed effort went just wide on 41 minutes.
The 2nd half opened with East being awarded a penalty for handball on 47 minutes but goalie Jayden Sheperd was on hand to save Aaron Smith’s spot kick.
The decisive goal came on the hour when a charged down shot fell to striker Russell Clayton on 20 yards where he moved the ball onto his right foot before firing it low and hard into the bottom right hand corner.
The last half hour was big on endeavour and slim on chances as Vista held on to a valuable three points to the delight of coach Steve Melling “We had to win today and now its still in the balance with two games to go.”

ELIZABETH Downs have secured the 2017 League Championship with a thumping 7-1 win over Salisbury Florina at Argana Park.
The Maroons required only one win from their remaining four games to clinch the league but within 14 minutes the celebrations started as they raced to a 3-0 lead.
A Matt Wise header from a corner on three minutes got the ball rolling before Billy Allotee tapped in from a Braiden Gundlach cross on 12 minutes and Scott Lindsay made it 3-0 on 14 minutes.
The home fans had another goal to cheer on 40 minutes when Allotee again benefited from the superb delivery of Gundlach to slide home his 2nd.
Florina lifted in the 2nd half with Downs keeper Ben Aldridge required to make some quality saves before Matt Watson made it 5-0 for the home side.
Former Downs striker Jason Trimboli scored a deserved goal for Florina but the Maroons pushed on with Lindsay and Darcy Clarke rounding out a clinical performance from the Champions.
Downs coach Alan Mottram “The pre season target was to improve on last season which we have done. We will celebrate and then quickly switch our focus onto the Cup.”

THE 2nd placed Parafield Gardens proved to strong for the relegated Southern Knights winning 5-0 at Bradman Oval.
Experienced Simon Catanzaro opened the scoring on 12 minutes and was at it again on 22 minutes when he rounded the last defender before finishing coolly.
A Dan Roadley through ball found Paul Whitney who clinically fired the ball into the top left hand corner as Gardens took a 3-0 lead to the break.
Knights, who needed a win to avoid relegation, fought hard but couldn’t find the net while Gardens Whitney bagged a brace before Ange Arambatzis made it 5-0.

INGLE Farm have secured their Sunday Premier Division survival with a 4-2 win over Salisbury Inter at Underdown Park.
The two sides went to the break locked at 2-2 after an entertaining first 45 minutes.
Ross Tripodi opened the scoring for Inter when he chipped the keeper from 30 yards on 10 minutes.
Farm captain then Chris Ennis rose high to head home from corners on 18 and 30 minutes to make it 2-1 before Tripodi grabbed his 2nd goal on the stroke of half time with a neat finish.
On the hour the visitors went 3-2 up when Ennis headed across goal from a free kick and Liam Mulvaney was on hand to finish.
The win was sealed on 75 minutes when Zac Halliday was put through one on one with the keeper before scoring to the delight of the Farm travelling support.
Farm coach Paul Simpson “Three wins in a row has really lifted the spirits around the club. Im pleased for the lads whose hard work deserves this reward.”
BRAHMA Lodge has recovered from two goals down to defeat Elizabeth Vale 5-2 at moflin Road.
The Vale jumped out of the gate with a goal in the 2nd minute when the inform Chris Nicholls headed home a Michael Francis corner.
Nicholls was at it again on eight minutes when cousin Daniel Nicholls played him in before he slotted under the keeper.
Lodge fought back to make it 2-2 at the break before powering away in the 2nd half to consolidate 3rd spot on the table.

Congrats to The downs on winning league. Also congrats to myself for predicting they'd win back in May.
