Match of The Day
BRAHMA Lodge have secured the League and Cup double with a convincing 5-1 victory over Salisbury Inter in the Challenge Cup Final at Hindmarsh Stadium.
Brahma, playing in the clubs first ever Cup Final, were hoping to follow recent history that has seen the last six Sunday Premier Division League champions complete the League and Cup double.
Lodge faced an Inter team who have played and won more Challenge Cup finals than any other club with the last victory coming in 2003.
The 1st chance of the game fell on seven minutes when Robbie MacDonald picked the ball up inside the box before blasting his shot into the side netting.
The opening goal of the final came on nine minutes when Chad Bugeja dispossessed Matthew Centrone before playing in Robbie MacDonald who side footed the ball into the net.
On 26 minutes the lead was doubled when Bugeja hammered a shot that Inter keeper Jayden Shepard could only block into the path of Jay Crescenzi who headed the ball home.
Inter needed a lift and they came close to a goal when play maker Alban Martini crafted an opening before shooting over the bar.
A minute after the break disaster struck for Inter when an under hit back pass was picked up by Michael Mullen who finished coolly to the delight of the Lodge faithful.
On 65 minutes the win was sealed when Bugeja received the ball from MacDonald before steadying and slotting the goal.
Inter gave their fans something to cheer about on 82 minutes when Martini played in substitute Cesk Mandi who made no mistake.
Brahma finished the game in style when Shaun Ward scored with a perfect free kick to put an exclamation point on a fine season.
Bramha coach Ryan Mogg “I thought the boys were right on their game from the off and played really well today. As a club it doesn’t get any better with both the seniors and reserves winning the League and Cup double.”
Mogg paid tribute to man of the match Phid Coumi “I am really happy for him. We really appreciate a lot of the unheralded work that he does which can often go unnoticed so it’s great to see him get the recognition that he deserves.”
Mogg while enjoying the victory has an eye for next season “We hope to keep the team together and realise that it will be even tougher next season but we will look forward to the challenge.”
Salisbury Inter President Carlo Bittoto “We are all very disappointed with the result today. The boys gave it their all but we had a couple of defensive slipups and Brahma capitalised on those. We felt we had enough of the ball but when Brahma broke they always looked dangerous.”
Bittoto paid tribute to the double winning Lodge “They are a very good team and certainly deserve their League and Cup double this season.”
