MATCH OF THE DAY
ELIZABETH DOWNS vs INGLE FARM
ELIZABETH Downs championship hopes remain alive after a 2-0 win over Ingle Farm at Argana Park.
Both teams came into the game knowing that anything other than a win would end their championship hopes and it was the Downs who started the brighter with Ben De Bono having a goal disallowed for offside on three minutes.
De Bono got on the score sheet on 10 minutes when a Scott Lindsay corner was flicked on at the front post by Matthew Wise before De Bono poked the ball into the net.
Braiden Gundlach went close to doubling the Maroons lead on 44 minutes when his goal bound shot was tipped over the bar by Farm keeper Tony Shaw.
On the hour De Bono had a shot charged down by Shaw and when the ball fell to Matt Watson his goal bound shot was well blocked on the line by Farm defender Marty Lara.
A depleted Farm outfit started to come into the game with Marcus Francesca and Liam Mulvaney both testing Downs keeper Ben Aldridge with solid strikes.
Just as Farm looked their most dangerous the Downs sealed the game when Gundlach whipped in a cross that Marty Lara was unlucky to header into his own net.
Shaw pulled off a brilliant save late in the game from Tommy Blackett to keep the final score line to 2-0.
The loss almost certainly ends Ingle Farm’s hopes of retaining their Championship and keeps the Downs hopes alive as they remain within two points of Brahma.
A Robbie Macdonald hat trick helped Brahma Lodge to a 4-0 win over Elizabeth Vale at Mofflin Reserve.
Brahma came into the game looking to keep their two point lead at the top intact while the Vale were looking to build on two successive victories in the league.
The visitors opened the scoring on 15 minutes when an Aleks Simic cut back found Macdonald who tapped the ball home.
Macdonald was at it again on 45 minutes when he got on the end of a corner to flick the ball in at the front post.
The game was all but over on the hour when Macdonald completed his hat trick by cutting in from the left before firing home and Chad Bugeja rounded off the scoring with a fine strike from distance.
Brahma coach Ryan Mogg “We just have to keep winning”.
PARAFIELD Gardens have fought back from a goal behind to defeat the inform Elizabeth Grove 2-1 at Dauntsey Road.
The Peckers had the better of the opening half and took a 1-0 lead to the break courtesy of a fine Jarred Foster strike on 15 minutes.
The 2nd half was a completely different story with Gardens drawing level on 50 minutes through a Simon Catanzaro wonder strike and the comeback was complete on 85 minutes when Grove keeper Travis Wordsworth could only parry a shot and Gardens coach Louis Brain was on hand to tap the ball in from close range.
SALISBURY Florina and Salisbury Inter have shared the spoils in their derby match with a 1-1 draw at Underdown Park.
Florina, looking to snap a three game losing run in the league, took the lead on 15 minutes through BJ McCormack.
Inter grabbed an equalizer on 75 minutes when Russel Deeley got on the end of a Marcus Marchioro pass to slide the ball home.
Inter pushed for a winner with Marchioro hitting the post and then Florina keeper Jamie Hart denying Andrew Butler on 85 minutes.
WEST Beach gained their first win of the 2016 season with a 3-2 win over Tea Tree Gully Lockleys Oval.
The home side flew out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 35 minutes with goals from Shane McGough, Thon and Ben Yolland.
Gully grabbed a goal back on 40 minutes and sent Beach nerves jangling on 75 minutes but Bud Hilton’s men hung on for a much deserved win “We have been knocking on the door for a while now so I am really pleased for the boys”.
The win moves Beach off the bottom with Gully now filling last place.
