our own SAASL Challenge Cup

Post by Not so special one »

Just a thought that instead of the current format, there could be a Saturday challenge cup & a Sunday challenge cup with the two challenge cup final winners playing in a grand challenge cup final.
Advantages;
A trophy for each of two cup winners & a grand cup final winner.
Players not having to play on a day that they didn't expect to play. (except the grand cup final)
No prelim cup round so teams go straight to round one.
The fact that there are now about the same number of Saturday teams as Sunday teams is a major change to the days when there was only one Saturday league back in the 1980's. So lets keep up with the changes.

Disadvantages;
It's not exactly like the FA Cup..
Any others that can be brought up.

You would still need one to trim the number of participating clubs to a power of two.

Leave it as it is.

Good idea. Especially from the perspective of teams being weaker having to play on different days.

why should there be a guaranteed finalist from Saturday and Sunday if one of the leagues is generally stronger in any given year?

How do you avoid that in the final? Why should the semifinals and final always be on sunday?

Just like East/West Conference in the NBA or AFC/NFC in the NFL

Historically the SAASL Cup final has always been on a Sunday - so why change it..??

Through out my years playing within the SAASL it always is an 'issue' for Saturday teams playing on a Sunday, have never really heard of Sunday teams complaining drawing to play on a Saturday... always comes across as an excuse before they even kick a ball
SAASL SUNDAY PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPION 2010 2011
SAASL CHALLENGE CUP WINNER 2008 2010 2011
SAASL CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS WINNER 2010
SAASL CICHANOWSKI SHIELD WINNER 2009 2011 2012

Best thing about the cup is getting to play a team that plays on the other day in my opinion.

Really?

I have found the opposite to be true with Sunday teams complaining that players have to work on Saturdays.

we play when we are drawn to play, Sunday is best day for the final, you will get bigger crowd numbers than you would if it is played on a Saturday.
I remember going to Hindmarsh Stadium on a Friday night to watch the Cup Final, that was a good game and a good night.
Even playing on your preferred day can still produce upsets - only last week you saw current div1 Sat leaders defeated by a near bottom Sunday two div 2 side - joy that is the cup round.

Can you quantify this?

When was the last Saturday final? What was the crowd?

I cant answer your question, just based on what I see at league games.
Would you expect a Saturday SAASL Cup Final to draw as big crowd than a Sunday Final ? I think not.
Having spent the last few years involved with a Saturday team , there are fewer supporters, and have found not many B+C players hang around to support the A's, as what they do on Sundays.
