CHALLENGE CUP Quarter Finals

Match of the Day

SALIABURY INTER (2) ELIZABETH DOWNS (3)
A stoppage time goal from Braiden Gundlach has seen Elizabeth Downs defeat Salisbury Inter 3-2 in their Challenge Cup Quarter Final tie at Underdown Park.
The two sides met last season in the semi-final stage with Elizabeth Downs running out 4-2 winners while Inter won their most recent encounter 1-0 a fortnight ago in the league.
The Maroons had the first real chance of the game on seven minutes when a Konrad Kosznik free kick floated just wide of the post while Inter keeper Nick Sincock watched on helplessly.
Inter thought they had the lead on nine minutes when an Andrew Butler corner was met well in the air by captain Mick Marchioro but his goal bound effort was bundled off the line.
On 33 minutes a Jason Trimboli free kick picked out Matthew Wise before his point blank header was superbly saved by Sincock.
The Downs were pushing for an opener and it came on 37 minutes when a poor defensive pass was pounced on by Scott Lindsay who picked his spot before hammering his effort low and hard into the corner from 20 yards.
The visitors doubled their lead on 41 minutes when a ball into the box found Trimboli who cut in before firing home from close range.
The game was almost over on 54 minutes when Trimboli brought a ball down around 50 yards from goal before trying an audacious effort which looked on target only to be denied by an acrobatic save from Sincock.
Inter then came back into the game on 57 minutes through some desperate work by Russell Deeley on the right hand side to keep the ball in play and when his cross found young Chris Fleming he buried the chance to the joy of the home crowd.
The home side were now buzzing as an Andrew Butler effort curled just wide on 61 minutes and then on 66 minutes Butler combined with brother Steve Butler but his one on one effort was well saved by Ben Aldridge.
With 15 minutes left on the clock Inter drew level when a ball into the box fell for Marcus Marchioro who fired it home to set up a thrilling finale.
The visiting Downs almost regained the lead within a minute when Kosznik rattled the cross bar from an acute angle.
Just as extra time looked certain Wise played a ball into the box that fell to Gundlach who rattled the ball home to the delight of the delirious Downs army.

PARAFIELD GARDENS (0) ELIZABETH VALE (1)
ELIZABETH Vale have booked a Challenge Cup semi-final berth with a deserved 1-0 win over Parafield Gardens at Bradman Oval.
Gardens a seven time Challenge Cup winner were looking to earn another Hindmarsh appearance while the visiting vale were looking for a repeat of their 1-0 win at Bradman oval in round eight of the league.
The teams went to the break locked at 0-0 with neither keeper made to work very hard.
The young Vale outfit grabbed the lead on 50 minutes when young Jarred Ebert picked up the ball in the middle of the park before moving forward and firing him home with a low hard effort from 25 yards.
Gardens pushed hard in the later stages of the game but the vale defence led by Tim Crawford held firm to book their 1st trip to Hindmarsh since they finished runners up to Gardens back in 2011.
Vale team manager Sean Westall “The boys all stood up today and did their part. Look we won’t win the league this season but we plan on giving the cup a real shake.”

INGLE FARM (3) ADELAIDE VILLA (0)
THREE 2nd half goals have seen 2014 Challenge Cup Runners Up Ingle Farm run out 3-0 winners over Adelaide Villa in an entertaining game at Walkleys Park.
Villa came into the game looking for a repeat of their convincing 4-0 win over the much fancied Brahma Lodge in round three while Farm were looking to keep their league and cup double hopes alive.
The visiting Villa started the game the better and had Farm on the back foot as keeper Chris Nicholls needed to be at his best to deny a fine Brenton Agars free kick from 25 yards.
Another well taken Villa free kick this time from Lee Robinson whistled narrowly wide as the teams went to the break locked at 0-0.
Farm, without competition leading goal scorer Musti Ipekdal, finally opened the scoring on 65 minutes when a Shalayiding Tursun shot was parried Villa keeper Brian Gale and Luke Air was on hand to fire the ball home.
Ten minutes later Turson was sent through one on one with Gale before finishing coolly and the game was sealed on 86 minutes when Turson fired home to book Farm’s semi final spot at Hindmarsh.
Farm coach Paul Simpson “We had a couple of guys missing today so im just really pleased to be in the semi-finals.”
Villa Coach Rick Cerracchio “We had our chances and didn’t take them. To Farm’s credit they did.”

STURT MARION (4) OLD IGNATIANS (1)
2013 Semi Finalist Sturt Marion will return to Hindmarsh Stadium after a convincing 4-1 win over Old Ignatians at the Marion Sports complex.
The two sides met in round nine at the same venue when Sturt ran out convincing 7-1 winners so the home side were heavily favoured to win although also wary of a competition renowned for upsets.
Marion got off to the perfect start on 10 minutes when a Kevin Costello corner was strongly headed home by Rick Mahony to make it 1-0.
The home side went two up on 35 minutes when a ball into the box found Keith Caine who made no mistake from close range.
Any chance of an Old Iggies comeback were put to bed when Cormac Rushe took on a couple of players before coolly slotting the 3rd and soon after he fired home his 2nd goal to make it 4-0.
Old Ignatians scored a late consolation goal but Sturt deservedly booked a semi-final spot to the delight of coach Chris Hodgskin “I’m really happy for the boys. We have squandered our league title hopes a bit so we are pleased to be alive in the cup.”

Bit of trivia - I reckon Hodgkinson played in the same E Vale team with Craig's dad ( in the 70s ).
