Amateur League State Team

Post by Mr Untouchable »

There are some rumors going around that the SAASL will be putting a state team together, with Serg Melta as the coach.
if true who do you think would make the squad, some good talent going around?

Heard they are trying to bring together the best including those "off field" to support the team and Hawksey is going to fill the position of motivational speaker / sports psychologist !!!

There was an announcement at the SAASL 50th Dinner that Sergio Melta was to assemble a SAASL State Select ( not sure whether it was open age or Under 23s or something like that) and that they will play a game against Adelaide United as part of AU's pre-season...still early stages yet.

How or why would Sergio Melta get the SAASL State Team job???

He is a fantastic coach and has amazing credentials BUT does he know anything about SAASL?

I believe he played and coached Saturday SAASL briefly....might be good to someone 'out of the loop' with current Amateur favourites....obviously will have assistants too. Probably helps a little having someone of his profile to enable the AU game to eventuate.

Will the FFA get the shits on and not allow adelaide united to play the state team. Didn't the FFSA not allow amateur teams to play federation teams even in friendlies?

Good for amateur players but will see how it eventuates.

If your coach has been told to send out 4 players what other teams are sending players. Even if you just go on the 2 premier leagues that's 80 people already. No lower teams allowed to send anyone out

Half the gardens side and half the downs. Not many others will get a look in is my prediction based solely on a whim. Might be wrong but there it is.

My preference would be an Under 25s (or 23s) Representative side (and an possibly also Open Age Representative side.).

Totally agree mate.
Mottram, Cook, Simpson, Scardigno, Baker just to name a few who have been within the SAASL for years with alot more knowledge of the players available to pick the right team - not just picking based on names ie like they picked the coach!

In the past the State Amateur coach position has often been given to a coach that does not have a current coaching role with an SAASL club.
As was the case with Eric Norman...alll the coaches you have listed would be excellent for the role but unfortunately disqualify themselves as they are still active at the club level.

But we are talking about a 'one off game' Swanny. The above mentioned should of been considered & rewarded by the SAASL for thier on-going invovlment & contribution to the league

Totally understand what you are saying, but how do you choose out of the list you have mentioned...who deserves 'consideration and rewarding' most ?
Might be a one-off game at this stage but who knows what might ensue.

I understand your view mate but the SAASL should of picked one from the league (they were happy to pick Melta) with an assistant & including a team manager..! Any of the above mentioned maybe happy to wear anyone of those hats for this 'once off game'

What makes it even more laughable is that the current coaches need to 'nominate' players to attend training/trials.. go watch some games & pick your own side

Short notice maybe (I have no inside information on the decision)...but how many games could one person realistically see, most coaches only see opposition sides players 2-3 times a season anyway....why is asking these coaches, who have been around for a while, to nominate players they think capable so silly ? I've seen a lot of Amateur football but would have little idea who is reliable for each of the 20 Premier Division teams week in week out....hardly any teams post comprehensive game reports any more.

would be great to see line ups, etc but too hard with late changes, players coming up from the b team, maybe when people come on here to post score could put a starting 11 up?

Lets put things into perspective so people have an understanding of whats happening.

The whole purpose of the event is to celebrate SAASL 50th year & Adelaide United were very keen to be involved. The event will also include free coaching clinics by AU players for kids & small games at halftime. The FFA through Adelaide United only approved the game last week so effectively there is 5 weeks to put it together. By chance Adelaide United were available to play on Sunday 13th July that happens to be Cup Round 3 which means league games dont need to be shifted otherwise probably wouldnt of happened. It is my understanding also there will be another State Team fixture at seasons end.

The SAASL has put together a group of 5 coaches from Sat & Sun Div 1 to assist Serg in the selection of an initial squad of approx 25-30 players & these players will be invited to trial for a final squad of 18. From that group of coaches Serg will probably choose 2 assistants. These types of things always stir up interest & debate about who is what which is great for the game. More importantly is the fact that we have a State Team again after many years & I hope its here to stay.

All makes perfect sense, but unlikely to satisfy the armchair blowhards on FN.

I assume nobody is looking further than div 1 but Michael Markham (USC Lion) ex-Adelaide United youth wouldn't be a bad selection considering the opposition.
