Adelaide Comets ( 1 ) Southern Knights ( 3 )
Steve Maguire 2, David Mooney (with his right foot )
Hard fought Round 2 Cup win for Southern Knights today against a strong and resilient Adelaide Comets. Knights welcomed the return of Paul Martin, Chris Bradley, Richard Kemp and Mickey Paay. Ben Vidgeon, despite playing extremely well this season in defense for Knights Reserves, offered to take up role as keeper, thereby allowing Steve Maguire to drop into a midfield role. Both teams struggled slightly with the uneven and slippery surface but eventually David Mooney was on hand to pick up the ball in midfield, advance forward and drive home a "right footed" goal for Knights to give the visitors a 0-1 lead. Lee White, Mickey Paay, Paul Martin and Glen Crute held firm in defense for Knights as Ben Jones, David Mooney and Steve Maguire provided the midfield drive...with Chris Bradley and Matt Harrison covering the forward roles. At half time the scoreline was still 0-1 to Southern Knights but 10 minutes into the half Adelaide Comets were able to level the score from the penalty spot. As a result of their goal, Comets seemed a little inspired and threatened several times to take the lead but some fine work from Ben Vidgeon held out the hosts.
With another extra time looming Southern Knights were awarded a penalty which Steve Maguire converted calmly (his 5th for 2011 ) and put Knights in front once more.
Minutes later Knights were awarded a free kick about 20 metres out...Maguire sent in a difficult curling kick which, despite a great effort from Comets keeper, ended up in the net...1-3 to Knights.....seconds later the referee signalled full-time.
Interesting to see Marco Flores watching from the sidelines....
Good to bump into fellow forumites Kolobaras (and his loyal VB) and Franco Unamerican...

Knights welcome the return of Mickey Paay and Chris Bradley after their absence from last weeks big loss !
The Comets East Parklands ground is not spacious and often the game appeared congested.
Comets keeper appeared to be in control and playing well....it took a good run and finish from David Mooney to give Knights a 0-1 lead.
David Mooney contemplates his goal (at his old Adelaide City training ground )...meanwhile..I think I captured a picture of BigFoot (AKA Sasquatch) in the background
Another Knights attacking foray, this time Richard Kemp, is thwarted by Comets keeper.
Ben Jones (5) shapes to close down Comets....whilst Glen Crute keeps a watchful eye and stands his ground.
Knights slot home the ball only to realise an offside decision had been made..
Comets keeper doing what keepers are supposed to do.
The referee explaining the finer points to Steve "Maggy" Maguire
Comets keeper...giving a message to the paparazzi perhaps ???
Comets are awarded a penalty early in the second half and successfully convert, despite Ben Vidgeon going close.
Alex Field made an immediate impact after coming on from the bech.
Lee White clears well from the near post......Steve Maguire steps up to take the spot kick for Knights.
Steve Maguire sends Comets keeper the wrong way....Edin Skrijelj (9) congratulates Maggy on yet another successful spot kick !
Comets tall central defender Andrew Mackie played well all day (had a good chat with his Father Ken...a former Cumberland / West Beach player).
Ben Vidgeon gets touched up during an aerial contest.....meanwhile Steve Maguire asks for the ball after Knights are awarded a free kick.
Waiting to pounce in the area, but not required as Steve Maguires kick crosses the line and celebrations ensue !
Oh when the Knights.........

Alex Field still playing, great to see. Always a class act as a youngster when I played alongside him until he was shunted up to senior football.
