Southern Knights ( 1 ) Salisbury Inter ( 2 )...with pics

Post by swannsong »

Southern Knights (1) Salisbury Inter ( 2 )
David Mooney

Tough game down at O'Sullivan Beach with the wind being a gig factor in the game.
Both teams lost players early on with a nasty clash of heads Scott Bradley for Knights and Adam for Inter.
Special mention to Steve Maguire who played a great game as emergency keeper for Knights.
Southern Knights had several chances to put the game away in the first half with the wind at their backs and the 1-0 buffer at half time didn't seem quite enough to hold out Joe McGregor's well drilled Inter side.
The experience of Scotty Wilson and Steve Horsburgh and some good goalkeeping kept inter in the game.
Southern Knights continued to create opportunities for Anthony Rideout, David Mooney and Matt Daughtry but once again good goalkeeping and defensive work held Knights at bay.
Inter's equaliser midway through the second half was an excellent curling 20 metre shot.
I was retreiving match balls :| when Inter posted their winning goal with about 10 minutes remaining.

Thanks to all the Inter lads and lasses that came into the Clubrooms after the game.
All the best for the rest of 2011 (except for Round 11).

Apologies for the poor quality images...it was a little dull and I'm back with the old camera temporarily.

Jason Rusk worked hard for Southern Knights in midfield winning many 50/50 balls.

Knights Chris Bradley and Sam Jones close down Inter's Colin Griffith.... whilst Knights go close moments later.

Last minute stand in keeper Steve Maguire looks on as Same Jones keeps a close rein on his man.

A good save from Inter's keeper prevents Knights stretching their lead.

Inter's Michael Marchioro, Scotty Wilson and Colin Griffiths hold ground as David Mooney sends Knights into a late second half attack.

Steve "Maggy" Maguire makes light work of a good save....moments later Anthony Rideout is unlucky not to extend Knights lead.

More anguish for Knights as another chance goes begging.

Image Image
Anguish turns to despair for Knights as Inter's number 5 equalise mid way through the second half.

Reserves
Southern Knights (0) Salisbury Inter ( 3 )

The Reserve encounter was a quite heated affair with a few tempers on edge and Inter, with the strong wind behind them, established a 0-3 lead by half time.

Must say I thought the referee had a good game, no complaints, game could have ended up with far more goals, very end to end but both keepers had some fantastic saves

Munchie and Baldy a very good couple of pickups for Salisbury Inter and will be very important to their promotion push. Is Anthony Rideout any relation to Cumberlands Rideout??

Yes, he is their more talented brother !!!
Their father Peter was a very skillful forward/midfield player who played for Elizabeth City (Playford), Brahma Lodge and Noarlunga Lions and a brief stint with Southern Knights

If that was the Knight back up keeper, I would hate to see how good the regular keeper is.
The 'stand in' was excellent yesterday.

Steve Maguire is usually excellent between the sticks but is a very, very useful left sided midfielder/defender/attacker who also is quite a good free kick specialist...kind of Knights equivalent of Rene Higuita
Knights have had several keepers since the start of pre-season Phil Smith (currently our Reserve keeper) Juliano Campos ( now with Beograd), Brett Andrews (formerly with Seaford and now ????), Ben "Touch" Vidgeon (who prefers not to play in goal), Ben Slater (former South Adelaide Panthers keeper who played against Beograd but was injured) and Maggy Higuita.

Swanny how good was your stand in keeper not good -great. Good to see you, been a few years since the inter v downs games when the crowd numbers were standing room only. Thanks for the hospitality after the game. See you round 11.

Peter is a great bloke as well. I was playing at Brahma Lodge when he came to the club. He virtually came in off the street, and asked coach Barrie Cook if it was alright if he could train with us,see how he would go,not long been over here. Long story short, consider myself very fortunate to have played alongside him for over a season.

I got to know, train and play alongside Peter at Noarlunga Lions when I played there in 1994-1995...really difficult to knock off the ball, great skills and a natural goal instinct. Peter's wife was also involved and played with the Noarlunga Lions womens team...all in all a true footballing family.
I didn't see him, but I believe he was at the game last week.
