History of the Playford Cup
The first Playford Cup was played during the season of 1999. It was initiated by the committees of the
Downs, Grove and Vale soccer clubs. The teams would battle it out for the Geoff Armstrong Memorial
Trophy (attached). The 1st Playford Cup was based on the three 1st division teams and their results
during the normal Amateur League fixtures. The winning decided by a mini league based on these
results. The Vale winning the competition.
P W L D F A Diff. Pts
Elizabeth Vale 4 2 1 1 16 4 12 7
Elizabeth Grove 4 2 2 0 5 12 -7 6
Elizabeth Downs 4 1 2 1 7 12 -5 4
There was no comp in 2000.

In 2001 there was a handicap competition played pre-season on a Wednesday night at Argana Park.
Eventual winners were the Northern Park Wolves.
Teams participating were:
Elizabeth Vale
Northern Dist. Redbacks
Elizabeth Downs
Eastern Park Wolves

The 2002 comp was hosted by the Playford Patriots.
Teams participating were:
Elizabeth Grove
Elizabeth Fields
Elizabeth Downs
Northern Wolves
The Downs played the Fields in the final with the final score 3-1 to the Downs, with the Geoff Armstrong
Trophy presented and the $500 prize money, donated by the Playford Patriots Soccer Club. In the other
game the Grove came from behind to win 2-1 over the Northern Wolves.”

The 2003 comp was again hosted by the Playford Patriots.
This year 2 teams from the Gawler and Barossa council also participating.
Teams participating were:
Elizabeth Vale
Redbacks
Greenock
Elizabeth Fields
Elizabeth Downs
Gawler
Elizabeth Grove
Munno Para
The Downs came from 2-0 down at half time to score a golden goal winner in the final against
the Vale played at Ramsay Park. The final score 3-2.

There was no Playford Cup from 2004 – 2009.

In 2010 The Downs hosted the Playford Cup at Argana Park
Teams participating were:
Elizabeth Downs
Angle Vale
Elizabeth Grove
Munno Para
The Downs played the Grove in the final with the Downs winning the Geoff Armstrong Trophy and the
$1000 prize money, donated by the City of Playford. All prize money was distributed evenly between the
clubs.

In 2011 The Grove have hosted the Playford Cup.
Teams participating are:
Elizabeth Downs
Angle Vale
Elizabeth Grove
Elizabeth Vale
It has been a great tournament to date with the final being played tonight between the Downs and the
Vale. The winner taking home the Geoff Armstrong Memorial Trophy and the City of Playford Cup.

i thought that it just finished up after the first couple of years, but its good to see it is still around.
its a pity munno para decided not to be part of it this year.....

i remember presenting the first one to the vale when i was 11 :)

The full time score was 1-1. It was a very good game, free flowing football from two very good teams.

Even better because Downs won.

Surprised you weren't there nugget... thought you may have come down to see two real teams playing

A very scrappy game with no real free flowing chances all night, Vale went 1-0 up with a neatly finished chance in the opening minutes. For the most of the game neither team could carve out a real goal scoring chance. According to people from both club the two teams had a few players missing from their sides.

Second half was much of the same as the first and it wasn't until a very dubious penalty decision went the way of the Downs however the resulting kick was saved and both sides went back at it. In the end it was Sam Parisi that finished off a goal mouth scrap to make it 1-1. Nathan Day had 3-4 free kick chances with all going very close but none hitting the target.

The end of the game at 1-1 and I assume diminishing light forced a penalty shoot out, with Aldridge saving two of the Vales 5 attempts while Downs were clinical.

Well done to the peckers for a good night and both teams for putting on a show.

I think thats a pretty accurate account, although i thought the Downs were pretty much at full strength.

good night overall, always a little devestated losing against the Downs but it wont happen in the season proper

Well done to the peckers for hosting the event!
