Francesco Totti has been advised not to postpone surgery on his fractured ankle, which will mean ruining his pre-season plans.
The Roma captain had a metal plaque inserted to stabilise the top of the foot he fractured back in February 2006.
He has made a full recovery and is the current Serie A Capocannoniere, not to mention just two goals away from the Golden Shoe award for top European scorer.
There were reports he could postpone surgery for months or even a year considering his form, but the medic who performed the operation warns that is not a good option.
“There is no urgent medical requirement to remove the plaque and it will not compromise his performances on the field,†noted Professor Mariani.
“But the metal should be taken off the bone, because in the long term it could modify the bone and fibres adjacent to it.â€
If Totti does decide to go under the knife, it will mean a month of complete rest, including two weeks without letting his foot touch water.
“This would drastically reduce or even forego his summer holiday time,†added the surgeon

Catania and Chievo clash at Bologna’s Stadio Dall’Ara in a relegation scrap that could have severe consequences for the loser. The outfits are just two of the five clubs still involved in the fight to avoid the drop with 90 minutes of the season yet to play. It promises to be a nervous afternoon for all involved.
Catania have had a disastrous second half of term. After initially flirting with the Champions League spots, the Sicilian outfit have slumped since they were forced to play the rest of their home games behind closed doors. It’s been a sensational collapse that has seen them win just once in their last 17 games – 1-0 at Udinese in late April.
Sunday’s action resulted in another defeat when Armando Pantanelli allowed a weak Cristian Zenoni shot to go under him in the 1-0 loss at Sampdoria. Nevertheless, he’s set to keep his place in the side and Catania chief Antonino Pulvirenti is remaining optimistic.
“We need to play against Chievo like we did in the play-off game against Albinoleffe last term,†the President stated. “We are all united as that is the only way we are going to win. I’m not expecting any favours from the other results.â€
Coach Pierpaolo Marino is set to keep faith with his attacking ploy despite the suspensions of Fabio Caserta, Mark Edusei and Cristian Silvestri. Davide Baiocco, Mattia Biso and one from Mariano Izco or Giorgio Lucenti should start in midfield. Takayuki Morimoto, Giuseppe Colucci and Gianluca Falsini are unavailable. Gionatha Spinesi is also a worry due to a muscle problem.
Catania, just one point above the drop zone, are also disadvantaged by the fact that Chievo are in some decent form and only need a point to keep their top-flight spot. The Flying Donkeys have collected three wins and a draw from the last five, but that’s not enough to have avoided a Press silence this week. Chievo want no interference in the most important pre-match build up of the season.
Coach Gigi Del Neri, who has revived the side’s fortunes since he replaced Bepi Pillon earlier this season, has no suspensions to deal with. However, the 4-4-2 tactician may not be able to count of a number of injury concerns in the shape of Lorenzo D'Anna, Fabio Moro, Giuseppe Scurto, Luciano, Giuseppe Cozzolino and Luis Cesar Prates.
Man on fire: Gionatha Spinesi (Catania) – With Catania having the worst defensive record in the Division, the striker, if he is passed fit, is going to have to be at his best yet again to keep his side up. With 17 goals already this term, few would be surprised if his most crucial comes this Sunday.
Last season: Not played
Form guide: Catania (W D L D L) Chievo (W L W D W)
Catania (probable): Pantanelli; Sardo, Stovini, Cesar, Vargas; Baiocco, Biso, Izco; Lucenti, Spinesi, Mascara
Chievo (probable): Squizzi; Malago, Mandelli, Mantovani, Lanna; Sammarco, Brighi, Marcolini, Semioli; Pellissier, Bogdani

Siena face Lazio in the last game of the season knowing that only a victory could save them from relegation. It’s do or die for Reggina whose Serie A status hangs in the balance as Milan visit the Stadio Granillo with their thoughts still on Athens. Reggina may have fought back from an 11-point Calciopoli penalty but it could all still be in vain. Although the Amaranto would be close to a UEFA Cup spot w...

Parma v/s Empoli
It’s do or die time for Parma against UEFA Cup qualifiers Empoli at the Stadio Tardini. Avoiding defeat should be enough to secure the Gialloblu’s top-flight status, but defeat would leave their future in the lap of the gods. The fact that Claudio Ranieri’s side have their fate in their own ha...

Gattuso: Italians do it better!
Gennaro Gattuso has won the World Cup and Champions League. “That’ll teach those who say Italian football is in crisis!â€
The battling Milan midfielder proved a key figure in both tournaments and wasted no time in answering his critics.
“That’ll teach those who say Italian football is in crisis! In one year we have won the World Cup and the Champions League. Some crisis, eh?â€
The Rossoneri beat Liverpool 2-1 in Athens with a brace from World Cup winner Pippo Inzaghi to take the trophy for the second time in five years.
However, Gattuso does not see this as wiping away the agony of their Final lost to the Reds in Istanbul two years ago.
“That defeat will remain with us for all our lives. This is another trophy. Today we are celebrating and Liverpool are crying, the same way we did in 2005.â€

Delio Rossi: “This squad can improve a great deal, so we must not rest on our laurels. Next year we will enter three competitions and cannot let ourselves get caught unprepared. Angelo Peruzzi is one of the greatest all-time players and we had to honour this champion.â€
Claudio Ranieri: “When I arrived, the idea of being at this stage with one game to go was a Utopia. The lads have put so much work in, we just need to maintain our concentration and not get distracted by what happens elsewhere. Today the team was very determined and focused. My future? Everyone knows I am currently 120 per cent focused on this team.â€
