Adelaide went to Gosford as the away team and was the only team that was prepared to play football. Central Coast, as the home team, reverted to ultra defensive tactics playing 5 players in defense and 4 players in the midfield and thus effectively parked a bus in front of their goals.
Adelaide dominated possession for long periods of the game whilst the Mariners sought to hit Adelaide on the counter attack. Against the run of play, the Mariners were rewarded for their negative tactics in the 61st minute in was was effectively their only half chance in the game. Striker Mitch Duke scrambled a pass into the on rushing Bernie Ibini who took one touch before smashing the ball past Adelaide's goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic.
Adelaide continued to dominate possession for the remainder of the game but could find no way past the Mariners bus. The Mariners now go on to face the Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League semi-final next Saturday.
Adelaide finished the season with a significant moral victory. Coach Josep Gombau was yesterday awarded a 2 year contract extension and thus has successfully overcame a concerted campaign for his removal by one section of the local Adelaide media. Mid season at the height of the media campaign to remove him, Gombau turned the media campaign on its head to unite both his players and the fans behind him. Under Gombau Adelaide is playing its best football since its birth 10 years ago.
Adelaide United fans can now look forward to next season when Gombau, in his second season, will be looking to lead Adelaide United to its first A-league Championship.
