Spain have joined the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup Final after defeating Germany 1-0 in Durban this morning.

Spain controlled the ball for the full 90 minutes which prevented a tired looking Germany from playing their normal game. However, despite their domination of the possession, Spain were finding it difficult to fashion any goal scoring opportunities with Per Mertesacker outstanding in defence for Germany. The game was seemingly heading towards extra time.

But the crucial goal eventually did come when Spanish defender Carles Puyol took advantage of the German zonal defence at a corner. Puyol came from deep to get first to the ball and powerfully head the ball into the back of the net in the 73rd minute.

It was only Puyol's 4th goal in 90 appearances for Spain and the most important of his career. Spain now head into the World Cup Finals for the first time in their history.

Its an ironic outcome with the misfiring Spaniards reaching the final whilst the quad goalscoring Germans who smashed Argentina and England are going home.
