Adelaide United lose the plot at Bluetongue

Adelaide United has extended its losing streak to four games after being convincingly beaten by Central Coast Mariners 0-3 at Bluetongue Stadium tonight.

Adelaide United appear to be suffering a case of the blues after going down to Gamba Osaka in the final of the Asian Champions League last week. Adelaide's situation was little helped by coach Aurelio Vidmar leaving the relative fresh Salley, Alemao and Spagnuolo on the bench.

Adelaide's previously rock solid defence has begun to leak like a sieve. It has now conceded 11 goals in its last four outings. While all four defenders have been committing elementary mistakes, it is the right back position that is of most concern. Young Robbie Cornthwaite is suffering a serious slump in form. He has clearly been identified as the weak link in the Adelaide backlines and opponents are targetting Adelaide's right flank with great success.

Adelaide fans can also be forgiven for scratching their heads over Vidmar's substitutions tonight. Down by three goals to nil, Vidmar chose to take off his only striker - the in form Cristiano - and the attack minded midfielder Cassio when there were several other more worthy candidates for substitution.

But most importantly, after the dust settles on this poor performance, Adelaide are still sitting in equal second spot in the A-League. Its not time for panic stations. Rather coach Aurelio Vidmar needs to stabilise his defence and get his players re-focussed on the next match against arch rivals Sydney FC.
